Hi, I read about your interesting story about your book crowdfunding . I have written one book in Italian (which I will translate in English) about my powerful transformational Method with Hypno Coaching and another one in English on tools to become confident in talking and relate easily with people.Thinking on how make them become NFTs. Besides I have been creating important epoxy resin artworks , shown and sold also in Miami, Italy Milan , Sardinia, Switzerland and more. Now I got allergic to epoxy resin and I'd love to create NFT out of these artworks which have also an energetic power. What, where, supported by whom doo you suggest I can proceed with all of this? Thanks in advance

Hi Marina! Unfortunately I think NFTs have fallen out of favor quite a bit since this essay. If they still exist I'm not sure which platforms to send you to!

Wondering if you have heard of anyone publishing nonfiction, poetry, or memoir this way? All the accounts I've read have been re: fiction...

Hmmmm, there’s lots of that on Substack, but not a lot on Mirror. So far, most of the content published on Mirror seems to be about the web3 world. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens when it attracts a more mainstream audience!

Fascinating write up. I, too, am beginning a journey to explore the possibilities of web3 fiction. All the best with your project!

Very interesting. Let me know when you launch!!!

I setup a mirror.xyz account. I'm not sure what to do next. Maybe, we can connect for a tutorial. Check in.

There is a Mirror discord server you can join where you can ask questions. That's what I did!

Thank you for sharing your Guinea pig story as Reese Witherspoon jumps on the bandwagon!

I don't grok it-not the process, you explained it well (thank you) but the point of it all. How is this better than Kickstarter? Doesn't turning your work into an unread and unappreciated commodity demean your art?

Elle Griffin's avatar

No, I don't think this is better than Kickstarter. (Though maybe someday it could be? If it becomes mainstream, theoretically the people who invested in your Kickstarter first, could re-sell their investment later- with both of you profiting from the sale. But it's way too soon to see if this will actually happen.)

As for unread and unappreciated work, I fear that already exists everywhere. As artists we will never rid ourselves of the struggle to find readers!

Great post....love this... for another take on NFTs in publishing see a Top 10 ebook NFT sales chart at: https://booksgosocial.com/top-10-nft-ebook-sales-chart-guide/

This is so interesting! I wonder how this model might eventually effect the traditional publishing model...If they'd issue their own NFT's for proposed works, or use NFT's as a measure of interest somehow. Dunno, but this seems to have the potential for positive disruption. Best of luck to you!

If trad publishing hasn't pivoted to the internet in any meaningful way I doubt they'll pivot to web3 😂

Thank you! This is the first description of NFTs I read that entirely makes sense to me – and I read quite a few. It is hard to say how this will all pan out in the future, but you are surely up to something.

Elle Griffin's avatar

Thank you Oliver! This whole thing was just an attempt to understand it myself so I’m glad I didn’t get lost in translation!

Of all the writing that's been done on NFTs, yours is easily the most succinct and explains exactly why web3 could change the game for authors. Excellent post, as always!

Thank you so much Kevin!

This was so useful as many of us explore web3/DAOs/NFTs. It's all so new and uncharted, sometimes even playing to learn feels scary and risky—thanks for jumping in and sharing learnings. For ex., I recently received $15K USD from an airdrop ("popular method used by cryptocurrency projects to reward early adopters") when I claimed free $ENS tokens for my ENS domain.

Ofc, that value continues to wildly fluctuate, e.g., it got halved only a short time later, though I've not really been looking at these funds as liquid (though they are). Also, there are increasingly tax implications for "playing," much as one would have to deal with with securities/AMT. https://www.forbes.com/sites/shehanchandrasekera/2021/11/17/ens-airdrop-comes-with-a-tax-billwhat-you-need-to-know/

Anyway, all that to say it's the wild wild west out there and it's so nice when someone can articulate clearly and concisely about the complexities. So thank you. And happy holidays <3

Truly, it is very scary and risky. And very, very early. But what a crazy airdrop success!

I'm very conflicted on this one. Normally I'm all for exploring and poking at new opportunities, especially tech-based, but every time somebody tries to explain the benefits and opportunities of cryptocurrencies and NFTs I get a very uneasy feeling. I can't quite pinpoint why, which isn't very useful, but there you have it. I think it might be to do with crypto and NFTs being almost exclusively the domain of the already-rich, which is not a playground I have the means or desire to play in.

This feels like something that could massively benefit some early adopters (like you, Elle!), but that if it became more mainstream the potential investment opportunities would be so thinly spread that we'd be back to square one in terms of useful patronage.

How all of this could be used is definitely undetermined. When the internet first started being a thing we couldn't have guessed we would use it for email and social media, etc. I think the web3 world is like that now. It will be interesting to see what will be built on top of it, but nothing is mainstream yet so it's hard to say what will stick!

Fantastic as always Elle. As someone who both writes, runs a Discord server and is trying to figure out how to marry all of that with crypto and web3 this was a fascinating read. Certainly sparked many ideas that I can try out in 2022.

Merry Christmas to you and yours Elle and here’s to your continued success in the new year.

Cheers 🥂

Elle Griffin's avatar

Thank you so much Thomas, that really means a lot! Are you planning any experimentation in this realm for 2022? And dare I ask, are you planning any fiction?

Thank you for sharing your process with this! Super interesting and helpful.

Thanks Edward!!!

You are always doing something new! LOL, this sounds interesting to me because I’ve been weighing the options of self-publishing again or pitch my new book to a bunch of indie presses. Kind of daunting to pitch because not only is each one customized by publisher but I have to research them and see if my book is a fit for what they publish. I’ll have to look into this, Elle. Thanks for the idea, I just may piggy back!

Elle Griffin's avatar

Haha!!! I know, it's the wild west out here. Anything's possible! 🤠

Elle Griffin's avatar

No matter what, you need an audience. Once you have that, whether you go the self-publishing route or the indie press route, it will be much easier!

I saw on Twitter that you were funding this story via crypto and was hoping you'd dive into more of the backstory!

I had been thinking about creating a coin that would allow people to get something cool related to my series, like an exclusive artwork, or the ability to vote on story choices. It dovetails nicely with my book, where people get tokens for completing real-world Quests. It seems like Mirror is set up to help with all of those functions?

Jon Auerbach's avatar

I answered my own question by visiting Harmon Cooper's LitRPG novel you linked above!

Elle Griffin's avatar

Awesome. 😎 Yeah Mirror seems to have a lot of interesting features that are pretty seamless to use. So far I haven't had to do anything tricky. Though I do get confused sometimes with all of the jargon. 🥸
