I truly admire your work, Elle, and everything that New_ Public and Josh are doing. Regardless, is this article also published online somewhere other than Substack (for a different bunch of reasons)?

On a personal level, there are few things that cause more cognitive and semantic dissonance than sharing truly valuable and meaningful content—content that addresses open protocols, digital sovereignty, human-centered networks, and communities—on a platform that promotes the exact opposite.

I totally understand, and yes. This series is also available as a digital or print pamphlet here: https://elysian.metalabel.com/internet-sovereignty

I have a vision for a community governed cultural networking map developing. The idea is to give communities (I'm currently in Latin America) a place to store and control their local knowledges and ancestral wisdoms. The plan is to build in mechanisms to prevent the knowledge becoming another resource to extract whilst encouraging face to face interactions. Direct message me if you want any more information or have any ideas how to propel this forwards. All the best, Robin.

"However, many of these projects are smaller scale, meant for a few hundred or thousand people."

I'm not sure that that's such a bad thing... Do we really have to have virtual spaces where hundreds of thousands and millions of people can gather?

I don't think we need - or are biologically and psychologically designed - to be "connected" to that huge of a community.

The fact that we currently occupy virtual spaces with that many people and that much information is, I believe, the reason for much of our stress and anxiety today.

https://www.artistcorporations.com are getting traction in Colorado. This is a practical precedent for the DAO concept that didn’t get as much practical traction, although it seems to jibe with what is in progress and proposed here

I'm very excited about this project! Yancey was originally planned to participate in this pamphlet, but couldn't because of his schedule. I'm very inspired by all that he is building!

Thanks for the heads up on some social media options. I looked up Gander and love the vision and am cheering for them to create a social media that might actually help people. And allow small investors to profit as well.

The time is right for the pendulum of capitalism to swing over to socialism aka - making sure human welfare and wellbeing is front and centre over corporate profits.

"we need", "we must", "we should". Sounds like Yeats' "standing on a wagonette" and screaming. In my opinion, doing is all we can do...

"Doing" is what we're all here to do.

Any links to the apps or pics thereof?

yeah sorry, these are mostly private spaces or in the case of Gander, still in development. And this also serves as an introduction to a printed volume, so I was writing with that in mind — can't rely on links.

I dug them up, it looks like they are still in pre-launch phase to the public. Q2 or Q3 of this year is eta. They have people using it and I would guess they are debugging it before the crowds hit. :)
