This is such a beautiful idea

Hi Spencer! I like those mini internets that you made and the intention behind them. You might appreciate that - for the same intention- we are experimenting with browser overlays that enable people to have a presence on webpages. If they choose to be visible, they can see others on the same page. They can run into and watch one another and be remembered through the traces they leave on webpages. Check out https://themetalayer.org. Would be interested to hear your input.

really interesting concept here spencer and put a note on your site. this reminds me of, honestly, the covid era where i hung out till late on discord servers with friends in different timezones, just going down internet rabbit holes, jumping around in minecraft, watching youtube videos. it’s a feeling like no other honestly, and this is a bit like that but with strangers and that’s an incredible little thing.

thanks for visiting and leaving a note!!

that's the exact feeling i'm hoping to cultivate.. would love to have you try what i'm making in that vein :) https://wewere.online and join the discord on playhtml if you're interested in helping out!

Every line I read invoked vibrant images of little corners on the internet that we could call ours. Now this is the kind of digital life to look forward to 🫶🏼

Thanks for this. I've bookmarked your site and want to try some of your tools on one of my websites when I get the chance.

This is such a beautiful and whimsical piece. It is deeply ironic how much community is actually missing from so many online communities now - each individual participant has to swim upstream against the built-in incentives and monetization of each platform.

thank you! we can still change the direction of the stream

Your piece was a perfect way to begin my day. Thank you for the new ideas. ichigo ichi-e, I'll remember that.

Thank you for the play.html-and one of the best descriptions of the current internet… how we’re stuck on a toll road with no place to get off and connect.

Wow, this is a really not nice comment that doesn’t add anything to the conversation or even make a counter argument. Just a note here that I’ll be deleting it.

Oh. Okay. So now there is this private conversation between us. Fine with me, Elle. I will go back and read your work more carefully and then I can continue the converso you are inviting me to. (You write something on economics, as I recall?)

This piece is by a guest author for a collection we collaborated on together, it's not my writing! You obviously don't have to agree with it, but it's a policy of mine to delete comments that focus on simple criticisms like "this is stupid" rather than engaging in the argument and saying what you disagree with and why. I know other newsletters are less stringent, but I don't like the Twitter-ification of the internet so I try to stop it from happening here!

I was really totally thrown by the phrase “hostile Internet” as it was being used. It strikes me real funny.

Well that's fair to say, and worth expanding on why its funny!
