I just read the most anti-hopeful article from another substack (DarkFutura, check it out!) and reading this right after something much less positive feels very strange indeed! Thanks for brightening up my thoughts ;)
Thanks for the mention. Although upon further reflection I think CNC machining will probably be more useful in bringing back stone construction, ornamentation and statutes. 3D printing for stone is insane although you'd still someone to assemble the building together at the final step for the CNC process.
Other than gargoyles in your backyard one can also at Maurian Empire Indian architecture. They're not impressive as buildings like Cathedrals but they have statue embedded all over the building. They were even used for storytelling (although mostly for Buddhist propaganda).
This a such a good article, thank you for sharing it with me. How might architecture change if we had more stone buildings? It’s an interesting thought.
Innovations in glass, steel and cement in the early 20th century created an "international" style. Basically New York. It's more of a new money style which is why was popular for financial districts.
Innovations in mass timber and stone construction may create a new style for a new 21st elite. Mass timber for software and climate tech hippies. Stone for old money businesses like Swiss watchmakers.
I was particularly drawn to the idea of investing in artists rather than simply buying their work and the vision of a digital Renaissance where technology enables a global exchange of creativity. Your ability to weave these ideas together was brilliant, and I wouldn't have thought about this in the same way. Great perspective, thank you.

The company has already developed so many incredible marble statues using the technology.
